Five easy ways to purge your possessions

eBay is a great way to purge your possessions and earn a few pounds to help with your house moveWhen you move house and get a removals quote, your removals company will give you a price based on the volume of your possessions. Because of this it’s in your interests to take as little as you can to your next property. However, many people have a huge number of possessions built up over the years, which can lead to large removals bills. Moving house is the perfect time to purge all your belongings, free yourself of years of clutter and save money on your removals at the same time!
Here are five easy ways to purge your possessions:
Use the Internet
The Internet is a goldmine when you’re moving house. Freecycle is a fantastic and worthwhile project that allows you to post items free of charge for collection in your area. It helps recycle and re-use items that would otherwise end up in landfill. Alternatively Gumtree is a free site from eBay that allows you to post items for sale – it’s got a decent user base which helps you make speedy sales.
Hold a car boot sale
You may think your items are worthless but others are likely to disagree. Car boot sales are great ways to raise a few pounds and also get rid of all the stuff you’d otherwise have to transport to your new house. Bring everything along, but don’t expect to make a fortune. Remember: the whole point of going there is to get rid of things, so don’t lose a sale over a few pence.
Give to charities
Charity shops always need new items and you can help them enormously during a house move. Even just a few items will be enormously beneficial to them. If you want to get rid of furniture, look for a charity that can oblige – many will come and collect it for you too, saving a trip to the dump. Some other charities specialise in certain items, such as garments; check before you take stuff along.
Give to friends and family
We all like to know things will go to a good home, so why not see if your friends and family need things before you throw them away? From TVs to vases and more, friends and family can take a great number of things off your hands and will often come and collect, saving you time and hassle at a time when you need to concentrate. If you think you may need the item later on, loan it to them – that way you know you’ll get it back in good condition.
Hire a skip
If charities can’t take your items (they may have specific policies), then the last thing you can do is hire a skip and throw away everything that can’t be recycled. It’s great if you can share one with a neighbour to reduce the cost. Skips are also ideal to get rid of garden waste and large items which are too bulky to get to the dump. You may even be able to dispose of paint and similar items in a skip, but check with the hire company beforehand as many of them forbid it.
Good luck purging your possessions!
